Chapter Ten

The house felt festive as Rachel prepared for the Thanksgiving weekend. She’d put up the Christmas tree and trimmings because she loved the holidays and wanted to enjoy the decorations. She baked sugar cookies and pumpkin bread and planned on making both an apple and a pumpkin pie for Thursday’s dinner. But most of all, she was excited to finally see Avery after all these weeks.

Rachel had decided to push aside Ariel’s situation for the weekend so she could enjoy her holiday. She’d also decided she’d connect with Ariel one last time to return her check. Now that Jack was investigating the case again, Rachel felt that she shouldn’t keep the money. She didn’t want any part of it.

Wednesday afternoon, Rachel and Jules visited Aunt Julie at the memory care center and ate lunch with her since they wouldn’t see her on Thanksgiving Day. Julie looked older every time Rachel saw her, and it broke her heart. Julie’s memory was fading just as quickly. As they were leaving, Julie looked at them almost as if she recognized them, but then her eyes faded again. Rachel was thankful she and Jules could spend time with Julie because she wasn’t sure how much time her aunt would be with them.

On Wednesday night, Rachel dressed carefully, putting on a light touch of make-up and curling the ends of her hair. She drove the forty minutes to Tallahassee International Airport and waited anxiously for Avery’s plane to arrive. Rachel didn’t have to wait long—it taxied in right on time, and soon he was striding toward her with a big grin on his face.

Avery stopped when he reached her, and they smiled at each other. “I’m here,” he said.

“You’re here,” she said, smiling.

Avery reached out and pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly. Rachel knew in that moment there would be no awkwardness between them. Being in his arms felt like going home.

Avery had only brought a carry-on bag, so they headed to her car, and she drove back to the house. As they talked non-stop, catching up on all the little details of each other’s lives, Rachel stole glances of Avery. She’d nearly forgotten how handsome he was and how fit he kept himself for his job as an FBI agent. His wavy brown hair was freshly cut, and the gold flecks in his warm brown eyes sparkled as he looked at her.

“I’m so glad you’re here,” Rachel said as she pulled into her driveway.

He reached over and ran his hand through her hair, making shivers run down her spine. “Me, too,” he said huskily.

They went inside, and she showed him to the master bedroom where he could put his bag. “Unless you’d rather be in a guest room,” she teased.

“Not on your life.” Avery pulled her close then and kissed her deeply. “I don’t want to miss a moment of being next to you.”

She laughed. “Sounds a little stalkerish if you ask me,” she said.

Avery opened a bottle of red wine,
